Research and planning – Digipak: Identifying conventions and analysing existing digipaks

Identifying conventions and analyzing existing digipaks

Purpose

  • A way of marketing the album to sell or promote the album.
  • A way that the consumer can keep a hold of, can be a collector's item
  • Attract a target audience
  • It allows the audience to buy into an artist ideas or lifestyle.
  • Something to symbolize the artist.
  • A form of synergy which is advertising and promotion.
  • Creates a relationship between the audience and the artist.

What are the generic conventions

The main generic conventions that are seen in a digipak.

  • Artist image
  • Track List
  • Album title
  • Company details
  • Record label
  • Critical sticker
  • Parental advisory label

Analyze two examples that are similar to your genre/artist

Ideas we are planning to use

  • Keep the layout simple - This is because if the layout was complicated, the album will look unappealing from the audience perspective.
  • Include key information which is important to the audience such as the album title, artist name etc
  • The artist should be the center of attention.
  •  Have the album image relevant to the title name

Conclusion

Researching about digipak convention was beneficial for our understanding digipaks. It helped us some of the reasoning why albums are successful and what most albums would have in common. Additionally, it also shows how conventions are used effectively to try and attract their target audience. It important that we use the correct conventions otherwise we run the risk of not selling our product to the audience which could lead to a loss. Therefore to ensure that we are successful we should look at making drafts of our album art and ensure that meet expectation of the target audience. And that we only include key information with the album. Additionally, we ensure that the title of the album links to the image of the album.
